Albert Einstein spent the last two decades of his life searching for a Unified Field Theory. This led to a great deal of fascination with the subject and drew people from outside the physics community to work on this "Theory of Everything". Einstein believed such a theory would attempt to explain and interpret all the physical constants of nature.
Chicago quartet, The Giving Tree Band use this scientific synonym to highlight their album’s blend of folk and roots traditions on their 2-disc debut. Unified Folk Theory will be released December 4, 2007 on Crooked Creek Records.
The Giving Tree Band (Bob Salihar, Patrick Burke and brothers Todd and Eric Fink) balance the simplicity and clarity of acoustic sound with meaningful and inventive songwriting. By transforming their focus from the high energy electric music of their early youth into a completely unplugged touring folk act, the band has eliminated many barriers between their music and their audience. Instruments featured on the album include acoustic guitars, mandolin, banjo, upright bass, slide dobro, cello, dulcimer, ukulele, and harmonica.
We want people to come away from our show feeling energized and inspired.
It’s great to hear people saying that they feel more motivated
to use their talents and carry out their own work
in a more mindful way that can also promote the
well-being of others and the environment.
-- Todd Fink
The members of The Giving Tree Band share more than a name with Shel Silverstein’s beloved children’s poem; they are willing givers of what they have to offer. The band has many progressive ways of expressing their music, art and lifestyles. The crew makes conscious food choices and plays on eco-friendly gear, using accessories made of hemp, organic cotton and recycled materials.
Unified Folk Theory was manufactured at the geo-thermal wind powered studio of Earthology Records, on the highest post-consumer recycled content available with non-toxic soy inks. Any CO2 gases created in the manufacturing process will be counteracted with ten trees being planted for every one thousand units produced and two dollars from each album sold will be donated to Hand In Hand USA.
Complex layering throughout the album gives way to allow each instrument its own space to breathe. Handcrafted songs and driving rhythms throughout offer so much to choose from, but make sure to check out "Crooked Creek Crawl" and "Wild Girl".
Similar to their early influences of Neil Young, Willie Nelson, Arlo Guthrie and Doc Watson as well as groups such as the Beatles, Old and in the Way, the Band, and CSNY, The Giving Tree Band is advancing stringed rhythm on their own terms.
